Laguna Beach Ousts No. 1 Pasadena Poly

Laguna Beach swept in doubles and ousted top-seeded Pasadena Poly, 11-7, in the quarterfinals of Southern Section Division V girls’ tennis playoffs Tuesday at Laguna Beach.

Rory Steinle and Caroline Tucker won, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot and Sabrina Messineo and Amy Falcone also swept at No. 2 to lead the Artists (12-10).

Ashley Maddocks finished 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, the only player to win a singles set for Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach will play fourth-seeded Santa Maria St. Joseph, a 10-8 winner over Palos Verdes Chadwick.

In Division II tennis:

Mater Dei 14, University 4--Melissa Esmero didn’t lose a game in singles for top-seeded Mater Dei (19-3). Mary Hung also won in singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. The Monarchs will travel to Troy for the semifinals.

Troy 14, Santa Barbara 4--Visiting Troy improved to 21-0 by upsetting fourth-seeded Santa Barbara (12-12). Troy’s Aya Sakoda won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and Sarah Riley and Cecelia Laumbauch teamed up for 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 victories.

Sunny Hills 10, Beverly Hills 8--Iris Yuan, Patti Kangwankij and Joanna Kao swept in singles and Sami Daily and Katie Williams teamed up for a 6-2 victory in the third round to clinch the quarterfinal victory for unseeded Sunny Hills (14-4), which has toppled the third- and fifth-seeded teams. Beverly Hills (15-7) was seeded third.

Sunny Hills will play second-seeded Santa Maria Righetti Thursday in the semifinals.

In Division III:

Laguna Hills 13, Agoura 5--Jamie Lautenschleger and Megan Davies lost only one game in doubles to lead third-seeded Laguna Hills (18-2). Stephanie Hung and Erina Hung also swept in doubles for the Hawks. Laguna Hills will play second-seeded North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 12, La Habra 6--Kristy Steel and Kristen Bergman won two doubles sets for Laguna Hills (18-5). Second-seeded Harvard-Westlake improved to 17-3.

Westlake 15, Garden Grove 3--Nina Yaftali and Audrey Dickey swept in singles to lead Westlake (21-0). Jamie Kong and Le Phan won two of three sets for Garden Grove (18-4).

In Division IV:

San Luis Obispo 12, Rosary 6--Third-seeded San Luis Obispo (16-4) lost only four games in singles, sweeping 9-0. In doubles Suzie Bruttig and Amara Boerner led Rosary, winning 7-6 (7-0), 6-3, 6-1.
