Ventura, Agoura in Semifinal

Mike Derse had six goals and three steals for Ventura High in a 16-8 victory over Malibu on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division IV water polo playoffs at Ventura.

Derse scored three goals in a six-goal fourth quarter for the Cougars (25-1), and Todd Barbosa had two of his five goals in the fourth quarter.

Ventura opened the game with a 5-0 run, but its aim went south during the second and third quarters, when several shots hit the goal posts.

Goalkeeper David Miller of Ventura had nine saves and scored a goal on a length-of-the-pool shot when goalkeeper Blake Drager of Malibu came out of the net to defend against a fast break.

Kyle Strache had six goals for the Sharks.

Ventura plays Agoura in a semifinal Saturday at UC Santa Barbara.

In other water polo playoffs:

Agoura 16, Arroyo Grande 11--Mike Campbell had five of his six goals in an eight-goal second quarter for the Chargers in a Division IV quarterfinal victory at Agoura.

Campbell, who had five steals and three assists, has 99 goals this season.

Ian Silvers, Dusty Sloan and Laszll Kupan each scored in the second quarter, when Agoura (19-7) took a 10-3 lead.

Hans Larsen had four goals, two steals and two assists for Agoura.

Goalie Justin Rosa of Agoura, who had 13 saves and four assists, helped limit high-scoring Marcus Vidal of Arroyo Grande to three goals.

Santa Barbara 8, Royal 7--Greg Snyder scored five goals for the Dons (20-9), including the game-winner with 3:32 remaining, in a Division IV victory at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Snyder scored the tying goal with 4:23 remaining after the Highlanders (17-10) battled back to take a 7-6 lead with 5:51 left on Ramiro Saldain’s goal.
