Chapman Wins Basketball Tournament

Lisa Nielsen and Lyndsay Brown combined for 29 points, lifting Chapman to a 49-44 victory in the championship game of the Redlands women’s basketball tournament Saturday.

Brown made the all-tournament team and scored 14 points in the championship final. Nielsen scored 15 and finished with a game-high 19 rebounds.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cal State Northridge 75, Cal State Fullerton 57--Andrea Thieme scored 17 points for the Titans (1-1).

Southern California College 79, College of Notre Dame 33--Sara Herkenhoff scored 16 points and Rachel Fiske had 15 for the host Vanguards (3-2).

Syracuse 58, UC Irvine 57-- Three players scored in double figures for UC Irvine. Chelsea Mackey scored 16 points, Janine Horton 14 and Shannon Anders added 12.

In the Chapman men’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 77, Southwestern College 65--Four players scored in double figures for the Panthers (2-0). Tim Werdel and Todd Canavan scored 14 points each, Matt Poutsma had 12 and Sammy Bell scored 10.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Concordia 87, Western Montana 80--Josh Giles scored 21 points for the Eagles and teammates Brian Vander Wal, Joel Burgess and Jet Quillen had 14 points apiece.

Western Montana’s Jake Gustafson scored a game-high 24 points.

In nonconference men’s water polo:

UC Irvine 8, UC Santa Barbara 2--Senior Ryan Bailey scored five goals to lead the Anteaters (18-6) to their 14th win in the last 16 games. Bailey has 87 goals and 90 points to lead the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

In the NAIA cross-country championships:

Concordia places 14th--Concordia’s women’s team finished 14th with 353 points in Kenosha, Wisc.

Three Concordia runners set personal bests: Tricia Mattson with a time of 18 minutes 42 seconds, Rachel Lafady at 18:44, and Christy Ide at 19:01.
