Harvard-Westlake Sinks to First Water Polo Loss

The Harvard-Westlake boys’ water polo team lost its first game Friday, 10-8 in overtime, to San Clemente in Irvine tournament pool play.

The Wolverines (10-1) were ranked second in the Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll while San Clemente was ranked sixth.

Peter Hudnut scored four goals and Joe Axlerod had nine saves for Harvard-Westlake, which was outscored, 3-1, in the extra period.

The Wolverines opened the tournament by defeating Irvine, 11-6.

Harvard-Westlake will face Clovis West today at 12:30.

In other water polo matches:

Agoura 15, Westlake 6--Mike Campbell had six goals and Hans Larsen added four for the Chargers (10-7, 2-0) in a Marmonte League victory at Agoura. Justin Rosa had 10 saves for Agoura, which outshot Westlake, 24-17.

Royal 8, Thousand Oaks 6--Derek Anderson and Tyler Templeton each scored fourth-quarter goals to help the Highlanders (11-6, 1-1) pull away from the Lancers (0-1 in league play) in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Jeff Alderson and Mike Schermer each had three goals for Thousand Oaks.

Nordhoff 10, Rio Mesa 5--Danny Shepherd scored five goals and Andy Fredell made 21 saves for the Rangers (4-10, 1-0) in a Frontier League game at Nordhoff.

Cory Gustafson scored three goals for Nordhoff, and held Todd Conrad to one goal although Conrad did score three times against other defenders.

Rio Mesa is 3-7, 0-1.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Campbell Hall 16, Crossroads 2--No. 1 player Melissa Nguyen won three sets without losing a game for the Vikings (9-1, 2-1) in a Delphic League victory at Valley College

The victories kept Nguyen unbeaten in 27 sets. No. 3 player Jackie Stein made her first appearance in a match this season and won twice.

Campbell Hall’s Bri Delamarter and Sarah Senechal swept to remain unbeaten with a 15-0 record since being paired at No. 3 doubles.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crescenta Valley def. Muir, 15-1, 15-2, 15-6--Tracy Jackson had 11 kills and Marci English had 23 assists for the Falcons in a Pacific League victory at Crescenta Valley.

Hoover def. Pasadena, 15-11, 19-17, 19-17--Triza Caballero had eight consecutive service points in the deciding game for Hoover (3-4, 1-2) in a Pacific League match at Pasadena. Candice Kortkamp had eight kills and four blocks, and Cira Adams had 22 assists for Hoover.

Montclair Prep def. Delphi Academy, 15-10, 15-3, 16-14--Chelsey Simpson had 11 kills and Courtney McLaughlin had eight aces for the Mounties (2-6) in a nonleague match at Montclair Prep.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Moorpark 145, Simi Valley 148--Crystal Russo shot a 42 for the Musketeers (8-2) in a nonleague victory at Sinaloa Golf Course.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 4, Glendale 0--Chrissy Sanford scored her 23rd and 24th goals for the Pirates (11-0-2, 9-0-0) in a Western State Conference game at Ventura.

Nicole Straky had three saves in her eighth shutout, and Ventura outshot the Vaqueros, 40-3.

Canyons 1, Santa Monica 0--Cassie Hencey scored on a pass from Heather Connolly in the first half for the Cougars (8-7-2, 4-4-1) in a WSC game at Canyons.

Santa Barbara City 5, Oxnard 0--Goalkeeper Diana Beltran made 10 saves for Oxnard but the Condors (1-10-1, 1-7-1) were outshot, 17-8, and lost the WSC game at Oxnard.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Dos Pueblos Invitational--Ventura, led by junior winner Josh Spiker, edged cross-town rival Buena, 67-71, to win the sweepstakes title at Dos Pueblos High in Goleta.

Spiker, runner-up in the Division I race of the Stanford Invitational last Saturday, clocked 15:17 over the three-mile course to defeat Jason Lanning of Buena by 51 seconds.

The victory was the third in five races for Spiker. His time was the fastest of the meet by 48 seconds.

With Ventura senior Matt Swaney missing the meet because of a sore hamstring, Sergio Cortez was the Cougars’ second-fastest runner with a third-place time of 17:05 in the freshman race.

Joel Salas of Channel Islands posted the fourth-fastest time of the meet with a second-place time of 16:22 in the senior race.
