Saugus, Thousand Oaks Score in Clovis Invitational Races

The Saugus High boys’ and Thousand Oaks girls’ teams won their respective large school races in the Clovis Invitational cross-country meet at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday.

Saugus, the No. 3-ranked Division I team in the state, totaled 105 points, followed by Clovis Buchanan with 153 and Villa Park with 196.

Senior Dan Klawer led Saugus with a fourth-place time of 15:43 over the 5,000-meter course that will host the state championships Nov. 28.

Senior Jacob Boeding was 10th in 16:15 and sophomore Nick Zoetewey was 25th in 16:38 for the Centurions. Junior Jon Mahar placed 32nd in 16:46 and senior Steven Wade finished 34th in 16:47 to round out the scoring for Saugus, the 1997 Southern Section Division II champion.

“Basically we went up there for the sole purpose of running on that course,” Saugus Coach Pam Thompson said. “So we were satisfied with the way we ran.”

Thousand Oaks Coach Robert Radnoti was ecstatic with the Lancers’ performance in the girls’ race.

Senior Melissa McBain finished fourth in 19:14, sophomore Kelley Hess placed fifth in 19:15 and senior Amanda Armstrong was eighth in 19:22 for Thousand Oaks, the No. 5-ranked Division I team in the state.

Freshman Julie Hancock placed 29th in 20:33 and freshman Ashley Patteson finished 33rd in 20:45 to advance the Lancers to a 79-point total.

Nevada Union of Grass Valley, Calif., the state’s No. 4-ranked Division I team, was second with 93 points and Brea Olinda was third with 127.

“The girls ran a terrific race,” Radnoti said. “I think we’re finally starting to get past all the colds that have been going through the team.”

Central Park Invitational--Shell Blevins finished fourth and fellow sophomores Katie Schettig and Jennifer Yadon tied for sixth to lift Quartz Hill to second-place in the Division II girls’ race of the meet in Huntington Beach.

Blevins clocked 19:09 over the three-mile course with Schettig and Yadon at 19:19.

Sophomore Kim Harrill finished 34th in 20:56 and sophomore Jennifer Groman placed 52nd in 21:29 to lead Quartz Hill to a 103-point total.

San Diego University City won with 90 points.

“Our top three did a great job for us,” Quartz Hill Coach Kevin Blevins said. “They’ve really been running well the last couple of weeks.”

Senior Jeanene Gerry of Camarillo placed second in 18:43 to help the Scorpions to a seventh-place finish.

Camarillo, with junior Danny Finley third in 16:05, placed third in the Division II boys’ race with 86 points.

Basic edged Las Vegas rival Durango, 59-60, for the team title.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Burroughs 10, Riverside North 6--Under new Coach Rey Rivera, a former Pacific standout who spent the past two years playing professionally in Europe, Burroughs (11-5) won the Inland Empire tournament at Valley View High in Moreno Valley.

Rivera took over Thursday for interim coach George Akropyan and the team responded with its first tournament championship.

Jason Falitz, a two-meter man, scored six goals for the Indians. He tallied two goals in each of the first two quarters, and had single goals in the last two, giving him 26 goals in the four tournament games and 115 this season.

Mike Barrera scored single goals in the second, third and fourth quarters for Burroughs.

Bart Vagdasaryan played the second half in goal, replacing Nick Triandos, and made six saves.

Burroughs advanced to the title game with a 10-8 victory over Troy in which Falitz had five goals, including three in the second quarter.

Marina 9, Royal 2--Casey Gilpin and Ryan Apperson scored for Royal, but the Highlanders (11-7) fell in a nonleague match at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Royal goalkeeper Tom Onyshko made five of his nine saves in the fourth quarter.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence def. Avalon, 15-5, 15-6, 15-3--Ines Monserrat had five kills and six digs for Providence (9-2, 7-0) in the second match of a Liberty League doubleheader sweep at Avalon.

Monserrat had five of her six first-match kills in the third game of the 15-6, 15-3, 15-4 victory. Monserrat also had five aces in the first match and Sonia Pelayo had six aces.
