Alemany Watches Loyola Catch Fire

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The fire trucks before the game were an aesthetically pleasing touch at the Alemany High homecoming.

Then came the real machinery, courtesy of Loyola.

Loyola thoroughly dominated Alemany and scored touchdowns on nine of its 11 possessions in a 60-20 nonleague victory Friday night.

So much for the Loyola letdown theory.

“Tell you what, we came to play,” said Loyola Coach Steve Grady, whose Cubs defeated Hart last week, 23-22, in a highly charged game between teams ranked in the state top 10.

Alemany (4-2), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times, looked fine on its first drive, traveling 71 yards in 1:45 and taking a 7-0 lead on a 12-yard run by De’Andre Scott.

Then came the Loyola lockdown.

The Cubs (6-0) used a combined 3:29 to score touchdowns on their first three drives. Their lone blemish: a missed extra point.

The Alemany defense was powerless in the first half, surrendering 250 yards and five touchdowns in only 22 plays.

Loyola finished with 411 rushing yards in 39 carries.

“We expected a physical game in looking at their guys up front, but we were manhandled,” Alemany Coach Jim Bonds said. “We know what we’ve got to work on, that’s for sure.”

John Grady, one of two sons being coached by their father, had 130 yards and three touchdowns in 10 carries. He did not play in the second half because of a sprained ankle.

“[Running the ball] is what we had to do to control them, because [Alemany] is dangerous every time they touch the ball,” Steve Grady said. “I felt we could run on them, but I didn’t think we’d get that many yards.”

Alemany averaged 40.6 points before Friday, one of many averages that will drop.

De’Andre Scott, who came into the game with an 11.1-yard average per carry, finished with 32 yards and a touchdown in nine carries.

Scott left the game early in the fourth quarter with high blood pressure, Bonds said.

Scott’s older brother, Deon, entered the game with a 38.4-yard average per catch. He finished with one catch for six yards.

Devin Montgomery, known more for his basketball skills, had his second consecutive solid game for Alemany.

A transfer from San Fernando High, Montgomery had nine catches for 116 yards and a 43-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Alemany quarterback Casey Clausen completed 27 of 53 passes for 329 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions.

Alemany was blanked by Loyola last season, 49-0.
