Rio Mesa 21, Oxnard 12--Rio Mesa was sparked by John Coleman’s 51-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a swarming defense that forced four turnovers and had seven sacks at Oxnard.

Anthony Manansala’s one-yard touchdown run with 1:15 remaining in the first half gave Rio Mesa (2-5, 1-1) the lead, 14-6.

Manansala, who gained 67 yards in 23 carries, scored from five yards out midway through the third quarter to put Rio Mesa ahead, 21-6.

Oxnard (1-6, 0-2), which had six starters out because of injuries, was led by Matthew Merricks, who completed six of 12 passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns.

Merricks connected with Aaron Neal on scoring passes of seven and 16 yards. Neal finished with nine catches for 116 yards.

Rio Mesa defensive end Kevin Mack had two sacks, one fumble recovery and a 39-yard punt return that set up Manansala’s second touchdown.
