Chuck Miller, who led Sylmar to the City Section playoffs every season in 11 years as coach, has resigned to take a position as student dean at the school.
"This was a tough one," said the 47-year-old Miller. "It's something I've tossed around since the opening came up. I'm going to miss my girls."
No one has been selected to replace Miller, who had a 158-76 record from 1988-98.
Jason and Jeff Spector, starting infielders at Taft High since their sophomore seasons, have decided to transfer to Chatsworth under open enrollment, according to their mother, Dotty.
The addition of the Spector brothers, both seniors, strengthens a Chatsworth team that figures to battle El Camino Real and Sylmar for the 1999 City Section 4-A title.
Taft High quarterbacks Steve Alvarado and Brandon Hance will split time in the Toreadors' first three games before a full-time starter is selected, Coach Troy Starr said.
Alvarado, a senior who took almost every snap for Taft last year, will start the season opener against Banning and the final nonconference game against Dorsey. Hance, a junior transfer from Notre Dame, will start against Crenshaw and both will play in all three games, Starr said.
Isaac Ramirez, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound sophomore lineman from Sacramento's Grant High, has transferred to Taft.
Former Taft offensive lineman Carlos Meza has been declared ineligible for one year from playing junior college competition with any school other than Pierce College after practicing one day with Pierce, then practicing with Valley College. He has decided to sit out the year at Valley, according to Monarch Athletic Director Chuck Ferrero.
Tom Racius, former quarterback for Valley College and Chaminade High, has given up his scholarship to Hawaii and returned to Southern California, his father said. He will not play this season.
Nick Arroyo, the starting goalie for Kennedy last season as a freshman, has transferred to Cleveland. Arroyo, younger brother of former Kennedy baseball star Tim Arroyo, also hopes to play baseball.
Greg Avila, an All-City player at Kennedy High last year, has joined the Cal State Northridge men's team. He began practicing with the Matadors on Tuesday.
