Wagner Is Up to Task for Astros
The last time Billy Wagner was at Bank One Ballpark, a line drive halted his season.
In his return Saturday, Wagner put a halt to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ seven-game winning streak.
The Houston Astro closer, playing in his first game at Phoenix since Kelly Stinnett hit a line drive off his face July 15, pitched two hitless innings for the victory, as the Astros defeated the Diamondbacks, 6-5, in 12 innings.
“It really wasn’t in my mind,” Wagner said of the line drive that put him on the disabled list until Aug. 6. “The first thing I thought about was my job, just, ‘I’ve got to do my job.’ You’re put in a situation where you don’t want to make a mistake, and I didn’t want to make one.”
And he didn’t. He ended the game by striking out the side.
Jeff Bagwell reached 30 home runs for the fourth time in his career, as the Astros ended the longest winning streak by an expansion team since 1961.
