1997 IN REVIEW

El Dorado and Kennedy shared the league title with 4-1 records, but Kennedy was given the league’s top seeding in the playoffs based on its 22-16 victory over the Golden Hawks in Week 9.

El Dorado had a brief but thrilling playoff season. The Hawks lost to Foothill in the first round of the Southern Section Division V playoffs, 50-49, in triple overtime after fighting back from a 22-8 deficit. Steve Warfield rushed for 112 yards and five touchdowns in a losing effort.

The Hawks placed five players on the first team all-league offense: Warfield, running back Brandon Fischer, linemen Carlos Rasch and Daniel Hancock and kicker Mark Wade.

Kennedy, seeded fourth in playoffs, beat Westminster, 10-3, in the first round, then lost to Newport Harbor, 38-28. The Fighting Irish built a two-touchdown lead in the third quarter, but could not stop Newport Harbor running back Bret Baker (202 yards and two touchdowns).

Kennedy placed four players on the first-team all-league offensive unit: backs Gabriel Roman and Joe Magallanes, receiver Aaron Lewis and lineman Neil Hannifin. Lineman Dave Smith was named the league’s defensive MVP.

Katella, led by running back Francis Johnson’s 1,508 yards and 15 touchdowns, finished tied with Loara for third in league with a 3-2 record.

The Knights had the misfortune of drawing top-seeded and eventual champion Santa Margarita in the first round. They were soundly defeated, 45-7.

Loara fell to Woodbridge, 27-0, in the first round.
