Sonora Wins in Final Minute

NORTH COUNTY

Junior running back Josh Gonzalez scored the winning touchdown with 35 seconds remaining in the game, giving Sonora a 29-22 nonleague victory over Santa Ana Friday at La Habra High.

With the score tied, Gonzalez scored on a three-yard sweep around left end.

Santa Ana’s loss was its 29th consecutive dating back to 1995.

CENTRAL COUNTY / Marina’s Mietiewicz Scores Twice

Ray Mietiewicz rushed for 193 yards in 19 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 60 and 13 yards to give Marina a 13-0 victory over visiting Corona del Mar at Westminster High.

Mietiewicz, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound junior, is one of 26 returning lettermen for the Vikings (1-0), who play at Newport Harbor next Thursday.

Corona del Mar (0-1), which lost last year’s season opener to Marina, 10-6, meets Costa Mesa next Friday at Orange Coast College.

Running back Jimmy Herzog and quarterback Dave Weir combined to rush for 315 yards to lead Costa Mesa to a 42-14 victory over Saddleback at Santa Ana Stadium.

Herzog finished with 188 yards in 36 carries and scored four touchdowns. Weir contributed 127 yards in just seven carries for the Mustangs.

Todd Duddrige opened the game with a two-yard touchdown run for Costa Mesa and Herzog had a one-yard plunge in the second quarter to give the Mustangs a 14-0 halftime lead. Herzog added another one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Saddleback twice cut the deficit to 14 points in the second half, but Herzog scored on a 78-yard run and Weir on a 57-yard run to extend the lead to three touchdowns.

SOUTH COUNTY / Peredia Runs Wild; So Do Sailors

Robert Peredia carried the ball 10 times for 231 yards and four touchdowns, leading host Newport Harbor to a 70-6 victory over Orange.

Peredia scored on first-quarter touchdown runs of 49 and 17 yards, giving the Sailors a 22-0 lead. Oscar Garcia then grabbed his second touchdown pass from Steve Gorman to open the second quarter. Lamar Lee and Peredia also scored on touchdown runs in the second quarter, increasing Newport Harbor’s lead to 43-0 at the half.

After Lee opened the second half by returning the kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, Orange got its only score when Jeremy Poole returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards.

Trabuco Hills quarterback Brandon Heaney rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to 20-14 nonleague victory over Moreno Valley Valley View at Trabuco Hills High.

Heaney scored on runs of 65 and 26 yards giving Trabuco Hills (1-0) a 14-6 halftime lead. Heaney finished with seven carries for 115 yards and completed eight of 12 passes for 71 yards with no interceptions.

David Barrett capped the Mustangs scoring with a six-yard return of a fumble recovery in the third quarter. Barrett and Heaney both also had interceptions for the Mustangs.

Valley View (0-1) closed out the game with a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

Michael Vo’s 73-yard kickoff return capped La Quinta’s 34-21 victory over Laguna Beach (0-1) at Laguna Beach High.

Vo’s return came after Laguna Beach scored to cut the Aztecs’ lead to 27-14, on a five-yard scoring run by Pat Chesley.

La Quinta quarterback Thi Huyhn completed 10 of 15 for 154 yards. Ben Fredrickson, who scored La Quinta’s first touchdown in the first quarter on a 15-yard pass, had four receptions for 103 yards.

Laguna Beach’s Ryan Schissler completed 12 of 21 passes for 119 yards in his first start at quarterback.

OUT OF COUNTY / Laguna Hills Is Run Over, 19-7

Mira Loma Jurupa Valley rushed for 361 yards and three touchdowns, defeating Laguna Hills, 19-7, at Rubidoux High.

Jurupa Valley threw only one pass in the game and it was incomplete.

Senior running back Ryan Johnson scored the only touchdown for Laguna Hills carrying the ball in from 13 yards. Johnson carried the ball 10 times for 42 yards.

Quarterback Brandon Champlin completed seven of 14 passes for 72 yards with no interceptions for the Hawks. He rushed seven times for 31 yards.

Tindu Kasiri scored two touchdowns to lead visiting Sunny Hills to a 28-14 victory over Baldwin Park Sierra Vista.

Kicker Jared Bruce scored four extra points and had a touchdown in the third quarter on an 11-yard run for the Lancers (1-0).

Sierra Vista scored all of its points in the fourth quarter.

Sean Schuck and Damon Van Hoorebeke scored on short runs to lead Huntington Beach to a 12-0 nonleague victory at Downey.

Schuck ran in from three yards to give the Oilers a 6-0 lead in the second quarter. Van Hoorebeke scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Huntington Beach failed on the ensuing two-point try.
