Brea’s Scoring Spree Stymies Buena Park

Brea Olinda scored 21 points in less than four minutes during the third quarter to break open a close game and defeat Buena Park, 34-13, Friday in a nonleague game at Buena Park High.

It was the 10th time in the last 11 years that Brea (1-0) has beaten the Coyotes (0-1).

After leading at halftime, 13-7, Brea took control of the game early in the third quarter when quarterback Travis Blood tossed a 30-yard scoring pass.

Two plays after Buena Park was forced to punt, running back Scott Lieng, who rushed for 146 yards in 14 carries, scored from 40 yards out. Less than a minute later, Deonta Birdsong returned a punt 34 yards for a touchdown and the Wildcats led, 34-7.

“We made a few adjustments on offense and defense at halftime,” Brea Olinda Coach Jon Looney said. “We broke a few big plays early in the third quarter which turned the game around, but our defense still has a long ways to go.”

Brea wide receiver Mike Prenovost scored the game’s first touchdown with 2 minutes 47 seconds left in the half on a 67-yard pass play from Blood. Blood had 222 yards passing and two touchdowns. Wildcat kicker John Pohlen had field goals of 32 and 42 yards.

Buena Park quarterback Earl Parker completed 16 of 33 passes for 215 yards.

Next Friday, Brea hosts Canyon and Buena Park travels to La Mirada.
