Siraki Runs Rampant Over Millikan Mark

Hoover High sophomore Anita Siraki took 25 seconds off the Millikan Invitational meet record Saturday, clocking 18 minutes, 42 seconds over the three-mile cross country course at Heartwell Park in Long Beach.

Siraki pulled away from the pack at the two-mile mark and passed the pacing bicycle as she sprinted to the finish line.

Her time took 51 seconds off the sophomore meet record.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Ventura 6, Righetti 5--Chad Caldwell scored the decisive goal with 18 seconds left in the second three-minute overtime period as the Cougars won the Thousand Oaks tournament in an upset over Righetti at Newbury Park High.

Righetti (5-1) entered the game as the top-ranked team in Southern Section Division IV. Ventura (5-0) was second-ranked in the division.

Caldwell converted from five meters after teammate Mike Derse stole the ball from the Righetti goalie. Caldwell also scored twice in the third quarter to give the Cougars a 5-3 lead before Righetti scored twice in the fourth period to tie the score.

Ventura 10, Buena 4--In an earlier pool-play game in the Thousand Oaks tournament against its neighbor, Ventura won behind four goals by Mike Derse and three by Brett Phillips.

Nordhoff 6, Calabasas 5--Danny Shepherd scored three goals to help the Rangers rally from a 4-1 deficit into a 4-4 halftime tie at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Scott Atkinson, Ethan Chapin and Jonathan LaBarge also scored for Nordhoff (2-2).

Nordhoff 10, Alemany 9--Nordhoff’s Cory Gustafson collected eight goals, including the winner on an eight-meter shot from the right side in the final minute of sudden-death overtime at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Gustafson scored in every period. The game was tied, 6-6, after regulation, and the teams played two overtime periods and the two-minute sudden-death period.

Ken Harinishi and Danny Paz each had two goals for Alemany (2-2).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Royal 11, Channel Islands 7--Humaira Mirza swept her sets at No. 2 singles for Royal (1-1) in a nonleague match at Channel Islands.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Buena d. Alemany, 16-14--Buena won the championship of the Ventura tournament with a come-from-behind victory.

The Bulldogs trailed Alemany, 9-2 and 14-11, before coming back with the final five points.

Buena setter Krystal McFarland was selected the tournament most valuable player.

Janee Richards and Gina Aglietti were selected to the all-tournament team for Buena.

Alemany standout outside hitter Sasha Hernandez suffered a knee injury.

In the semifinals, Buena defeated Ventura, 15-6, and Alemany defeated Lakewood, 15-13.

Campbell Hall d. Viewpoint, 15-3--Alexis Kotelko had six kills and Lena Carew added five kills for Campbell Hall in the final of the Laguna Blanca tournament.
