Magnolia’s Late Rally Defeats Estancia, 21-20

Magnolia overcame a 20-6 deficit going into the fourth quarter to win its season opener, 21-20, over Estancia on Saturday at Glover Stadium.

Estancia (0-1) missed two field goals attempts in the final four minutes of the game and Winston Posadas’ interception ended the Eagles’ last drive at the Magnolia 13-yard line with 44 seconds left.

Will Speer and Asi Faoa scored in the fourth on 38- and nine-yard runs. Speer gained 135 yards in 20 carries.

Magnolia (1-0) scored first in the second quarter on Faoa’s five-yard run, but Estancia answered with three consecutive touchdowns, two in the second quarter, by Manu Tanielu, who had seven receptions for 123 yards.

Estancia’s Kenny Valbuena completed nine of 18 passes for 125 yards.

In other nonleague games:

Brethren Christian 25, Cerritos 13--Nathan Farris outscored Cerritos, 23-13, and set a school record with a 95-yard punt return in the Warriors’ victory.

Farris also had two receptions for touchdowns and kicked two extra points and a field goal to lead the Warriors (1-0).

In eight-man nonleague:

Liberty Christian 78, Los Angeles Lutheran 36--Los Angeles Lutheran played Liberty Christian to a 22-22 tie at halftime, but Los Angeles Lutheran lost their quarterback and the game in the second half, as Liberty Christian (1-0) set a school record for most points in a half with 56 in the second half.

C.J. Leeman, quarterback for Liberty Christian, completed 11 of 24 passes for 244 yards and six touchdowns. Leeman also ran for two touchdowns. Teammate Mike Osegueda caught four passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Whittier Christian 44, Van Nuys Montclair Prep 0--Senior Matt Jones scored six touchdowns to lead Whittier Christian (1-0). Jones gained 251 yards.
