Neill Earns Nevada Job After Success in Opener

Former Hart High quarterback David Neill, a freshman at Nevada, will be the team's starting quarterback for next week's game against Fresno State.

Neill entered the game last Saturday against Colorado State with 29 seconds left in the second quarter and ended up completing 16 of 29 pass attempts for 155 yards and one touchdown in a 26-14 loss to the Rams. Neill threw two interceptions.

"It was a shock," Neill said. "They went through the first two quarterbacks and the coach pointed toward me [saying], 'You're going in.' "

The 6-foot-4 Neill was an All-Southern Section pick last season in his first as a starter for Hart.

New streak: Pam Karbowski's goal seven minutes into overtime lifted the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team to a 1-0, nonconference victory over Oregon State (1-4) Sunday at North Campus Stadium.

Tawni Takagi made two saves and Jenny Willemse added three more for the Matadors (1-4), who ended a five-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Two down: Allessio Smith scored two minutes into overtime, giving the Cal State Fullerton men's soccer team a 5-4 nonconference victory over Cal State Northridge on Sunday at Fullerton. Northridge (0-2), which got two goals from Mike Preis, took a 4-3 lead on Trevor Schmidt's goal with 1:48 remaining before surrendering a goal with 17 seconds in regulation.

Unlucky 7: The Pepperdine women's soccer team lost, 7-0, to No. 2 Santa Clara on Sunday in the Waves' West Coast Conference opener at Santa Clara. Alicia Bueschen, a La Reina High graduate, scored for the Broncos. Pepperdine dropped to 2-2-1.
