Payne’s 8 Goals Make a Splash and Crescenta Valley Wins, 19-8

Justin Payne scored six of his eight goals in the first half and Crescenta Valley defeated Dos Pueblos, 19-8, in the first round of the Jim Toring tournament Thursday at Harvard-Westlake High.

Kenny Carpenter added six goals for the Falcons (2-1), who will play La Canada in the quarterfinals today at 4:30 at Harvard-Westlake.

La Canada defeated Crescenta Valley in the Southern Section Division III semifinals last year.

In other first-round games:

La Canada 19, Crespi 5--Tristan Nyby scored five goals for the Spartans at Harvard-Westlake.

Cyrus Jamnejad scored three goals and Michael McDay, Devin McIntiire and Sandy Ryan each added two for La Canada (2-0).

Glendale 21, Long Beach Poly 7--Kevin Witt, a senior two-meter man, had nine goals and 16 steals for the Dynamiters (1-0) at Long Beach Millikan High.

Ben Lee had 11 saves for Glendale, which will play Millikan today in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m.

Harvard-Westlake 20, Burroughs 10--Peter Hudnut, Brian Ault and Billy Strickland each scored three goals for the Wolverines (4-0) at Harvard-Westlake.

Harvard-Westlake led at halftime, 11-8.

Harvard-Westlake plays Peninsula in a quarterfinal game today at 3:30.

In other matches:

Newbury Park 12, Notre Dame 10--The Panthers avenged an 8-6 loss in the Thousand Oaks tournament last week in a nonconference game at Valley College.

Sid Pehrson and Matt Rhodes each scored three goals for Newbury Park (2-3).

Chris Langer and Bobby Zych each scored three goals for Notre Dame (3-2).

Flintridge Prep 16, Burbank 7--Matt Klekner scored seven of his eight goals in the first half for the Rebels at Flintridge Prep.

Klekner has 26 goals this season.

Sam Tyre added three goals and Scott Keen made eight saves for Flintridge Prep (4-2).

Andre Setaghian scored four goals for Burbank.
