Hart Not Crushed by Forfeit

There wasn’t much fallout among Hart High players in the aftermath of forfeiting a 49-13 victory last week over Quartz Hill, according to Coach Mike Herrington.

“They could care less,” Herrington said. “They know they won the football game.”

The coaches, on the other hand, took it a little harder.

“I checked that list five times tonight,” Herrington said before the game Friday night against Thousand Oaks. “I checked by name, height, weight, position, everything.”

Hart, ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll, discovered the use of an academically ineligible receiver last week and submitted forfeit papers Thursday to Quartz Hill and the Southern Section.

Rivalry begins: Animosity needs time to ferment.

So no one expected bad blood between Birmingham and Van Nuys on Friday night. No one expected a grudge match because the neighboring schools have not played regularly since 1994, when Birmingham switched conferences from the Valley Pac-8 to the Northwest Valley.

But the schools have agreed to resume the series and the Rotary Club of Van Nuys is trying to add fuel to the fire. The club held a luncheon for the teams this week and donated a trophy for what it hopes will become an annual “Van Nuys Rotary Bowl.”

Quite a kick: Andre Ramos’ 40-yard field goal last week not only was the difference in Littlerock’s 9-6 victory over Leuzinger, it also was a school record and only the second field goal kicked in the seven-year history of the Lobo varsity program.

Baseball crew: When it comes to all-star chain crews, Chatsworth High is No. 1. Working the down marker for the freshman-sophomore game Friday night was Mike Kunes, the City Section 4-A baseball player of the year. Also on the crew were Chatsworth baseball players Chad Redfern, Scott Sellz and Ryan Robbins. They were working to earn money for the baseball team.

Precaution: Noah Happe, a senior wide receiver for Simi Valley, was taken by ambulance to Simi Valley Hospital after experiencing tingling in his hands Friday against Saugus.

Happe fell to a knee in the huddle after catching a nine-yard pass with 58 seconds left in the first half. He was taken to a hospital as a precaution, his mother, Pamela Bartholomew, said.
