Brea Olinda Blows Canyon Out of Water

Share

Using numerous misdirection and counter plays, Brea Olinda took control early and kept Canyon’s defense off balance on its way to a 55-0 victory in a nonleague football game Friday at Brea Olinda High.

The Wildcats (2-0) took a 21-0 lead into halftime, but blew the game wide open by scoring 28 points in the third quarter, with most of their starters on the sidelines.

Brea tailback Scott Lieng slashed his way for 149 yards in 15 carries and touched the ball only once in the second half--a 22-yard run that set up a 26-yard touchdown dash two plays later by Ryan Fortner to make it 28-0.

Trailing, 14-0, with just under three minutes to play in the half, Canyon (1-1) had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard. Facing a fourth and three at its own 17-yard line, Scott Ausmus took a fake punt snap 24 yards to the Canyon 41 with 2:08 remaining.

The next play, a 12-yard completion from Josh Chelini to Ausmus into Wildcat territory, was called back because of an illegal man downfield.

Brea got the ball back with 25 seconds left and promptly scored on a 36-yard flea-flicker from quarterback Travis Blood to Roni Benigno, who had three receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

Blood was five of 10 for 130 yards and three touchdowns.
