Northridge Places Fifth in Cross-Country Meet

Javier Ramirez placed 10th and John Greene finished 12th to help Cal State Northridge to a fifth-place finish in the men’s race of the Aztec Invitational cross-country meet at Balboa Park in San Diego on Saturday.

Ramirez, a senior from Nordhoff High, timed 25:56 over the 8,000-meter course.

Greene, a senior from Agoura, clocked 26:15.

Sophomore Nick Hamlin finished 18th in 26:52 for Northridge, which totaled 138 points.

Arizona, paced by a 1-2-3-4 finish, placed first with 16 points.

Sophomore David Lopez, runner-up in the 1996 state Division I championships for Hoover High, placed fourth in 25:22 for the Wildcats.

Northridge finished 12th in the women’s meet with 326 points.

Senior Andrea Bruins was the Matadors’ top finisher in 49th place. She timed 20:07 over the 5,000-meter course.

Arizona, led by individual winner Amy Skieresz, defeated Arkansas, 42-54, for the team title.

Skieresz, a 1995 graduate of Agoura High and the runner-up in the 1997 NCAA championships, timed 17:03 with teammate Tara Chaplin second in 17:11.

It was the second victory of the season for Skieresz, the 1996 NCAA champion.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 11, Santa Monica 8--Loran Leidinger hit a two-point goal with two minutes left to break an 8-8 tie and the Monarchs won the fifth-place game of the Mt. San Antonio College tournament.

Leidinger’s shot, taken from outside seven meters, came in a man-up situation for Valley (5-4).

Leidinger finished with three goals.

Ryan Rittmiller and Brian Peterson each had two goals and goalie Andrew Langer made 10 saves for the Monarchs.

Langer made eight saves in a 15-4 victory over Santa Monica earlier in the day.

Pepperdine 11, Navy 6--Jeremy Pope and Robert Grayell each scored three goals for the Waves in a first-round match in the Southern California tournament at Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach.

MEN’S GOLF

New Mexico tournament--Freshman Jason Allred fired a one-over-par 73 and finished 10th to help Pepperdine tie for third place at the Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Waves scored a 54-hole total of 17-over-par total of 881, tying New Mexico, to finish behind Texas and second-place Brigham Young.

Texas finished at 861 and Brigham Young was at 869.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine def. Florida State, 15-13, 15-8, 11-15, 15-11--Jamie Hill had 22 kills and Lindsay Phillips added 18 kills and 13 digs for Pepperdine in a Judy Bellomo tournament match at UC Santa Barbara.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Long Beach State 3, CS Northridge 2--Myisha Delany’s goal in overtime snapped a 2-2 tie and negated earlier goals by the Matadors’ Elizabeth Hoiby and Kerrie Clavadetscher in a nonconference match at Northridge.

Cal Lutheran 8, Occidental 0--Heidi Theis scored two goals for Cal Lutheran in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Occidental.
