Hardin-Simmons Strikes Fast, Knocks Down Chapman, 48-19

Hardin-Simmons (Texas) scored all its points in the first half and cruised to a 48-19 victory over Chapman in a nonconference football game Saturday at Chapman.

Cameron Creager gave Hardin-Simmons a 7-0 lead with a four-yard run on the opening drive of the game. David Rausch then intercepted a pass by Chapman quarterback Bill Poe and returned it 18 yards for another score.

Chapman’s Aaron Goodman returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown, but Hardin-Simmons (1-1) scored twice more in the first quarter to build a 28-7 lead. Chapman is 0-2.

At the San Diego State cross-country invitational:

Delgado places fifth for SCC--Sophomore Maribel Delgado finished fifth overall for SCC in the women’s collegiate open division in San Diego. Delgado covered Balboa Park’s 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes 27 seconds, which was the fastest time ever by an SCC women’s runner on that course.

The Vanguards finished eighth out of 17 teams, despite competing without top runner Monica Landa, who is redshirting this season because of an injury. Landa was an NAIA national qualifier as a junior last year.

Chapman finished 15th in the team competition and was led by Tara McGranahan, who finished 43rd in 21:07.

In nonconference men’s golf:

UC Irvine places 11th--UC Irvine opened its season with an 11th-place finish at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque. UCI’s Andrew Wen shot two-under 70 to finish 17th with a three-day total of 219 on the University of New Mexico Golf Course. Jeremy Harrison was 19th (220), Mike Lawrence 57th (229), and Eric Wang 61st (230).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Chapman 2, Colorado College 2--Aaron Polling and Adam Medlin each scored in the second half to lead the visiting Panthers to a 2-0 victory.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Southern California College 2, Simon Fraser 1--Annie Jacobs and Robin Callahan each scored in the second half to lead SCC over Simon Fraser, ranked second in the NAIA. The unranked Vanguards have given up only one goal in their first seven games.

In the Southern California water polo tournament:

UC Irvine 18, Navy 9--Dan Klatt and Ryan Bailey each scored six points to lead the Anteaters at Newport Harbor. In an earlier game, Jeremy Pope scored a two-point goal in each half to lift Pepperdine to a 7-6 win over the Anteaters.

UCI will meet UC Santa Barbara in a consolation semifinal game at 7 a.m. today.
