Burundi President to Speak at Installation
- Share via
An appearance by the president of Burundi will highlight an annual dinner for the California Central Coast World Trade Center today.
Pierre Buyoya, a retired major who came to power in a 1996 coup, will speak about economic reforms and trade opportunities in the struggling Central African state.
Burundi’s neighbors enacted crippling trade sanctions on the country after the military coup toppled a democratically elected government.
The president’s visit should encourage greater awareness of the small country and its reform movement, said Gary Snyder, executive director of the Oxnard-based trade center.
A 5:30 p.m. reception will precede the center’s annual installation dinner, where new officers will be announced.
Both events will take place at the Embassy Suites Resort Mandalay Beach in Oxnard. For information, call 988-1406.
