The Southern Section, the largest of the state’s 10 sections with 505 member schools, is seeking applicants for the job of commissioner of athletics.

Dean Crowley, who has worked for the section since 1976 and has been commissioner since 1993, announced in February he would be resigning effective Sept. 1.

The commissioner is the chief administrative officer of the section. The salary range for the position, which is a single-year contract with a performance-based renewal option, is $77,520 to $100,452.

Some of the qualifications required are a minimum of five years’ experience as a high school principal or equivalent and evidence of strong advocacy for interscholastic athletics.

Some of the responsibilities include: directing and coordinating policies set by the Southern Section Council and Executive Committee; interpreting and enforcing rules and regulations; budget preparation and coordinating with the treasurer on administration of finances.

“We’re obviously seeking people with extremely strong leadership skills . . . someone who exemplifies courage, patience, empathy and can understand what it’s like at the school level,” said Marge Godfrey, president of the Southern Section. “It’s going to be a challenging time. More and more, we’re subjected to litigation. So the job requires someone with good judgment who loves high school sports.”

The application deadline is April 28. For application requests, inquiries and documents, call (562) 860-2414.
