Amritraj, Warburg Win Doubles Title

Freshman Stephen Amritraj of Crespi High and Sam Warburg of Sacramento won the boys’ 16 doubles at the 31st Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships on Saturday at the Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort in Grenelefe, Fla.

Amritraj and Warburg, seeded No. 2, defeated unseeded Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Ind., and Jonathan Stokke of Chapel Hill, N.C., 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Amritraj is the second player from the region in two years to claim the national invitational tournament’s boys’ 16 doubles title. Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo was a winner in the same division last year.

No. 2-seeded Tiffany Brymer of Apple Valley and Abigail Spears of Valley Center defeated No. 3 Lindsay Dawaf of Olney, Md., and Anne Nguyen of Lancaster, Pa., 6-1, 6-3, in the girls’ 18 doubles final.

In the girls’ 14 doubles final, No. 3 Allison Baker of Raleigh, N.C., and Alexis Prousis of Northbrook, Ill., defeated No. 4 Erica Sauer of Somis and Riza Zalameda of Los Angeles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

SWIMMING

Jennifer Parmenter of Granada Hills High, defending City Section champion in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, has signed with USC.

Parmenter, a seven-time national champion, set a Southern Section Division I record in the 200 individual medley and won section 500 free titles as a freshman and sophomore at L.A. Baptist.

She transferred to Granada Hills in 1997.

“I’ve got a lot of dreams and I think USC can help me reach them,” Parmenter said.

Parmenter, who just missed qualifying for the 1996 Olympics in the 400-meter individual medley, has her sights on the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Coach Mark Schubert of USC is the U.S. coach for the 2000 Olympics.

“I love swimming,” Parmenter said. “I’ve worked so hard for 10 years and accomplished so much with it, and now there’s so much more coming up.”

GOLF

Registration is underway for the Toyota Golf Skills Challenge on April 23-25 at Vista Valencia Golf Course in Valencia.

The event features competition in eight golf skills, including long drive, middle-iron shot, chip shot, short iron, putting, pitching over a hazard, trouble shot and green-side bunker shot.

Players are given three shots per skill, with the best counting toward an overall score.

There are divisions for men, women, men 50 and older, juniors 14-17 and youngsters 8-13.

Registration is $20 per player.
