No. 2 University Defeats No. 4 Servite in Golf

The only thing on the line Monday at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club in Irvine was bragging rights, but those can be pretty serious stakes when you play for University or Servite High, ranked No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, in the Times Orange County golf poll.

Especially when you have three of the top prep golfers in the nation, Ron Won and Brian Sinay of University and Nico Bollini of Servite, playing in the lead group.

The stars did not disappoint and neither did the rest of the University team, which shot a five-player total of five-over-par 185 to complete a 354-371 victory over the Friars. Servite shot 191 on Monday.

Bollini, a Friar sophomore, holed a 30-foot, downhill putt on the second hole and carried the momentum to shoot two-under-par 34--the low round of the day.

Bollini conked himself with his putter after barely missing a 10-foot birdie attempt on the fourth hole, but went to three under after back-to-back birdies on five and six. He made a bogey at the treacherous par-three eighth hole, but still finished tied with Won for two-day medalist honors at three-under-par 67.

Won, who opened with four-under-par 30 last week at Fullerton Golf Course, struggled with his putter Monday and shot 37. The Stanford-bound senior missed two par putts from within three feet, but caught a break on the fourth hole when his approach shot flew over the green and into a tree and landed near the fringe. Won got up and down for a par.

Sinay, a junior, shot 35 Monday for an 18-hole total of 68. His lone birdie Monday came on the seventh, when he hit a sand wedge from 85 yards to within 18 inches and tapped in.
