Chaminade’s Urquidez Tosses Two-Hitter in Rout

Here’s some advice to batters facing sophomore Jason Urquidez of Chaminade High: Hit him now, because in the coming years, there won’t be many chances.

“He’s going to be one of the dominating guys for the next few years,” Coach Scott Drootin of Chaminade said.

Urquidez (4-1) pitched a two-hitter Tuesday while striking out six in Chaminade’s 15-1 Mission League victory over Harvard-Westlake in a game halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule at Harvard-Westlake.

The only loss suffered by Urquidez came to Notre Dame and unbeaten pitcher Phillip Polanco.

Urquidez has used a sharp breaking ball combined with an effective fastball to help the Eagles (12-4, 3-2 in Mission League play) emerge as competition for Notre Dame and Crespi in the league.

Harvard-Westlake (5-9, 0-3) didn’t put up much of a battle, committing seven errors and scoring only when sophomore Matt Horn homered in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Jim Milkovich contributed four singles for Chaminade, with Ryan Soroka, Spencer Gordon and Bobby Berger each adding two hits.

“This is one of the hardest working groups I’ve had and it’s paid off,” Drootin said. “It proves if you work hard, good things happen.”

Urquidez is 6 feet, 165 pounds, still growing and hoping to become one of the region’s best pitchers.

“Power pitchers can do real good,” he said. “Finesse pitchers do well too. If you can do both, you can dominate.”
