2,000 Prep Athletes Expected at Mt. SAC

The high school portion of the 41st annual Mt. San Antonio College Relays will be held Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut.

About 2,000 athletes from schools throughout California and some of the Western states are expected to compete in a meet that begins at 8 a.m. with heats for the boys’ 3,200-meter relay and ends with the girls’ 6,400-meter relay final at 6:30 p.m. The university/open and invitational distance carnival begins at 7 p.m, with the remaining events in those divisions being held Sunday.

Diana Taurasi of Chino Don Lugo was named to the second team of Parade Magazine’s All-American girls’ basketball team. Taurasi, a junior, was selected state player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports.

Lindsey Davidson of Division II state champion Brea Olinda was named to the third team. Ebony Hoffman of Harbor City Narbonne and Chelsea Trotter of Brea Olinda were selected to the fourth team.

The championship game of the Babe Herman baseball tournament between defending Division I champion Crescenta Valley and El Monte Mountain View will be played Saturday at at 7 p.m. at Stengel Field in Glendale.

Long Beach Millikan’s baseball team won its second consecutive Big West Invitational tournament title by defeating El Toro, 5-2, last week in a game that was called after five innings because of rain.

Bishop Moore of Orlando, Fla. defeated Placentia El Dorado, 4-3, to win the National Classic tournament. It was El Dorado’s third appearance--and third loss in the final. The Golden Hawks lost in the championship game in 1991 and 1997.

Shortstop Jamie Clark of Santa Ana Foothill was named most valuable player of the prestigious Best of the West softball tournament after leading her team to the championship last week in Santa Maria. Foothill (15-3) defeated Fresno Bullard, 1-0, in eight innings to win the title.
