George Ker, Former Coach at Valley, Dies

George Ker, who coached football, track and field and cross-country for 31 years at Valley College, died Tuesday in Chatsworth. He was 76.

Ker coached at Valley from 1958-1989.

One of his football players was Terry Donahue, former UCLA football coach. Ker’s cross-country teams won three state championships.

His son, Walt, became a successful men’s and women’s volleyball coach at Cal State Northridge.

He is survived by his wife, Jolie, sons Walt and Cliff, daughter Ellie and six grandchildren. No funeral is planned per his wishes.

FOOTBALL

* The Westlake High football team has been named winner of the Southern Section athletic team academic championship for the third consecutive year.

The Warriors posted a collective grade-point average of 3.01 in the 1998-99 fall semester. The team will receive its award before the Angels’ baseball game April 28 at Edison Field in Anaheim.

* The San Fernando Valley Football Coaches’ Assn. will hold a clinic for coaches from youth football, high school and college on Monday at 7 p.m. at Bassco Sporting Goods, 7541 Woodman Place, Van Nuys.

Scheduled to speak are Chuck Lyons from College of the Canyons and Craig Wall, defensive coordinator at Cal State Northridge. Admission is free. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

* The Moorpark High Football Booster Club will stage its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on April 21 in the staff lounge at Moorpark High.

Recently named Coach Tim Lins is scheduled to attend the meeting and discuss the team’s weight-training program. Other topics of discussion will include the team’s 1999 media guide, advertising sales and fund-raising activities. Information: (805) 523-3335.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Jennifer Capehart of Cal State Northridge has been selected as the Big Sky Conference women’s field event athlete of the week.

Capehart, a sophomore from Kennedy High, cleared 11-6 in the pole vault to finish fourth in a meet against Baylor and host UCLA on Saturday.

She equaled the best mark in the conference this year established by freshman teammate Allyson Crosby and tied for third on the all-time conference list.

GOLF

* Kim Carpenter, who grew up in Tarzana, has been appointed tournament director of the PGA Tour’s Mercedes Championships at the Kapalua Resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Carpenter will oversee tournament management, operations, marketing and sales.
