Choi’s Running Helps Glendale Upset Muir, 70-57

Senior Doug Choi of Glendale High won the 400 meters and ran on the victorious 400 and 1,600 relay teams to help the Dynamiters upset Muir, 70-57, in a Pacific League boys’ track and field meet Tuesday at Glendale.

It was the first dual-meet loss for Muir since 1979, when the Mustangs were defeated by cross-town rival Pasadena.

“I told the kids before the meet that we could beat them,” Coach Brian Lowe of Glendale said. “I just thought we matched up well against them.”

Choi won the 400 in 50.4, finished second in the 200 in 22.3, and ran on teams that won the 400 relay in 43.8 and the 1,600 relay in 3:33.6 for Glendale (4-1, 2-1 in league meets).

In another boys’ meet:

Rio Mesa 92, Oxnard 35--Jerome Stevens of Rio Mesa won the shotput and discus throw to help the Spartans capture the inaugural Pacific View League title in a meet at Rio Mesa.

Rio Mesa (6-0, 4-0) has won three league championships in four years.

Stevens, a senior who set a school record of 183-1 in the discus in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Saturday, won that event with a throw of 176-8 and the shotput at 49-3.

Senior John Coleman won the 100 in 10.9 for Rio Mesa.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Rio Mesa 111, Oxnard 15--Sophomore Porchea Carroll had a hand in four victories for the Spartans (5-1, 3-1) in a Pacific View League victory at Rio Mesa.

Carroll took the 200 in 25.0, the 400 in 58.3 and the long jump at 17-9. She ran on the Spartans’ 400 relay team that timed a winning 49.9. Senior Natasha Pomele won the shotput at 38-2 1/2 and the discus at 124-9 for Rio Mesa.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Hart 16, Burroughs 2--Freshman Jesse Ferlianto won three singles matches without allowing a point in a Foothill League match at Burroughs.

Hart’s No. 1 doubles team of Andrew Davidson and Todd Castagna (32-1, 15-0) swept three matches.

Van Nuys 4, Sherman Oaks CES 3--Alex Mangu of Van Nuys defeated Tal Ben-Ari 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, at No. 2 singles to break a 3-3 tie for the Wolves (7-5, 5-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Sherman Oaks CES.

El Camino Real 7, Taft 0--Matt Jones won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles in a Northwest Valley Conference match at El Camino Real (10-2, 8-1).

Granada Hills 6, Chatsworth 1--The Highlanders (11-1, 8-1) were 4-0 in singles play in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Chatsworth.

Crespi 13, Chaminade 5--Stephen Amritraj swept three matches at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Carlos Gil and Ray Purwadihardja also swept for the Celts (7-7, 5-3) in a Mission League match at the Northridge Tennis Club.

Harvard-Westlake 16, Alemany 2--Steven Gersh, Craig Nehaman and Matt Cron swept their singles matches for the Wolverines (11-2, 7-1) in a Mission League match at Cal State Northridge.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Canoga Park def. Reseda, 15-2, 17-15, 15-10--Philip Mramor had 21 kills and 13 digs, and Nghiem Dinh had 15 assists for Canoga Park (7-4, 4-4) in an East Valley League match at Reseda.

Monroe def. Van Nuys, 15-9, 15-5, 15-1--Razell Loveria had 13 kills for Monroe (11-0, 8-0), ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Monroe.

Grant def. North Hollywood, 8-15, 15-11, 15-9, 14-16, 15-10--Ryan Diaz had 13 kills and Robert Kelly had 12 for host Grant (8-3, 6-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Chaminade def. Crespi, 13-15, 15-8, 13-15, 16-14, 15-12--Adam Hickerson had 19 kills and Art D’Egido had 18 for host Chaminade (5-8, 2-5) in a Mission League match.
