Glendale Gets Past Canyons

Matt Helman hit a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to give host Glendale College a 3-2 victory over Canyons on Thursday and a share of the Western State Conference South Division baseball lead.

Jason Botts hit a two-run double in the seventh for Glendale (18-19, 10-7 in conference play), which moved into a first-place tie with Pierce.

Gerald De La Pena (5-1) pitched a four-hitter for the Vaqueros.

Moorpark 17, Ventura 11--Ed Castellanos hit a home run, double and two singles for the Raiders in a WSC Northern Division victory at Moorpark.

Steve Nelson hit two home runs and had three runs batted in for Moorpark, which collected 15 hits.

Mike Bannon had three singles and four RBIs for the Raiders (22-15, 11-7).

Valley 13, Bakersfield 12--Angel Barajas scored from third base on a wild pitch in the 11th inning to give the Monarchs a WSC Southern Division victory at Valley.

Paul Ramirez and Kevin O’Hara each had three hits for Valley (13-22, 7-11).

The Master’s 8, Pt. Loma Nazarene 5--Luke Kollman hit a three-run home run and Mike Ploharz hit a homer during a four-run seventh inning for the Mustangs in a nonconference victory at Pt. Loma Nazarene.

Kollman had two hits and three RBIs and Ploharz had three hits and two RBIs for Master’s (31-8-1).

Ty Sager had four hits for the Mustangs.
