Poly Shows New Motto to Grant, 11-2

Just win, baby. That’s the attitude Poly High’s baseball team has adopted during a month-long unbeaten streak against teams that have hardly offered much competition.

In winning their 12th consecutive game, the Parrots relied on the pitching of Carlos Reguengo and the hitting of Juan Flores, Juan Guerrero and Jaime Perez to rout Grant, 11-2, in an East Valley League game Tuesday at Grant.

Grant (15-5, 9-2 in league play) was the toughest opponent the Parrots (18-5, 11-0) have faced since losing a spring-break doubleheader to El Camino Real and Birmingham on March 27.

But the Lancers committed four errors and failed to take advantage of sporadic wildness by Reguengo (9-2), who struck out seven and walked five. Reguengo was helped by double plays in the fifth and sixth innings that left the Lancers reeling.

“They were awesome,” Coach Chuck Schwal of Poly said of the double plays.

In the fifth, first baseman Angel Espindola fielded a grounder, fired it to shortstop Johnny Manuel for the forceout and Reguengo took the throw at first for the double play.

In the sixth, third baseman Flores grabbed a hard-hit grounder, threw it to second baseman Guerrero, who completed the double play with a throw to Espindola.

Flores had three hits, Guerrero had two hits and two runs batted in and Perez contributed two hits and three RBIs. Perez, brought up from the junior varsity last week, hit a two-run single in the third when Poly was ahead, 3-2.

In four games at the varsity level, Perez is five for nine.
