The Orlando Magic, undergoing a massive overhaul in which four of last season’s starters have been sent elsewhere, traded center Ike Austin to the Washington Wizards for Terry Davis, Ben Wallace, Tim Legler and Jeff McInnis. Like his former teammates, Austin, who signed a three-year, $15-million contract as a free agent in January, was a victim of a move to assemble a younger, more athletic team for first-year Magic Coach Doc Rivers.

Jeff Van Gundy, who has survived four mostly tumultuous seasons as coach of the New York Knicks, received a contract extensions through the 2002-2003 season after leading the Knicks into the NBA finals. His new boss, Scott Layden, who had spent 18 years with the Utah Jazz, was introduced in New York as the new general manager and executive vice president of the Knicks. . . . A freak tornado that hit downtown Salt Lake City left the Delta Center, home of the Utah Jazz and Starzz, with holes in the roof and broken windows on the exterior.
