For the second time in less than a week, a California black bear was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday night east of Fillmore, authorities said.

The bear was hit about 9:15 p.m. on California 126 at Cavin Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver of the small Toyota pickup that struck the bear was not injured, authorities said.

A tow truck was summoned for the vehicle and a forklift was en route to get the bear Saturday night, and state fish and game officials were investigating, the CHP reported.

Another black bear was struck and killed by a semitruck east of Fillmore on Wednesday.

Authorities believe recent brush fires have obliterated the bears’ natural habitat and forced them to forage in orchards for food.
