Freshmen Lead Foothill Past Marina in Water Polo

Despite a late surge by Marina, Foothill held on to beat the Vikings, 7-6, in nonleague girls’ water polo Wednesday.

The Vikings, who upset Capistrano Valley on Tuesday, could not contain Foothill freshmen Brittany Hayes, who scored four goals, and Gabby Dominque, who had two.

Erin Wilson and Cara Chlebicki had two goals each for visiting Marina (1-1). Foothill is 1-0.

In other nonleague games:

Corona del Mar 7, El Modena 4--Freshmen Christina Hewko and Hayley Hapeman each scored twice for the Sea Kings.

Villa Park 9, Mission Viejo 4--Kristyn Pulver scored four goals and Cindy Henn had three for host Villa Park (1-0).

In the Coyote boys’ basketball tournament:

Buena Park 54, Rancho Alamitos 48--DeAndre Gibson scored 18 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead Buena Park (2-0).

In the Fullerton girls’ basketball tournament:

Fullerton 50, Bolsa Grande 46--Tasha Worthy scored 14 points and had eight rebounds for host Fullerton (1-1). Teammate Julie Blied had 12 points and seven assists. Angela Diaz was the high scorer for Bolsa Grande (0-2) with 11 points.

In the Vernie Ford tournament:

Valencia 56, Riverside La Sierra 28--Michelle Pietka scored 28 points and Monica Jackley added 20 to lead host Valencia (2-0), which plays Norco today.

In the Woodbridge tournament:

Mater Dei 80, Cerritos 43--Kristian Kirkpatrick scored 20 points and had 16 rebounds for host Mater Dei (2-0), and teammate Maile Shimoda had 18 points and six assists. Mater Dei will play Woodbridge in the third round on Friday.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Brea Olinda 3, Jurupa Valley 0--Visiting Brea Olinda (1-0), got goals from Josh Alexander, Travis Bodnar and Adam Thorpe.

Dana Hills 2, Murrieta Valley 2--Mario Compean’s goal in the final minute salvaged the tie for host Dana Hills (0-0-1). Kevin Cory scored the other Dolphin goal.

El Modena 3. Rialto Eisenhower 1--Ramon Coronado, Mauro Barron and Stephen Torres scored for El Modena (1-0).

Katella 4, Troy 3--Ivan Serrano had the game-winner when he headed in a crossing pass from Hugo Martinez in the final minute for Katella (1-0).

Marina 3, Santa Ana 1--Ryan Parker scored twice for Marina and David Linares scored for fourth-ranked Santa Ana.

Santa Margarita 1, Capistrano Valley 1--In a season opener, Spencer George scored for Santa Margarita and Tim Smith tied the score in the first half. Erick Foss made nine saves for the Eagles and Zack Mikelson had 11 for the Cougars.
