The Division IV semifinal marked the first time Newbury Park had met San Luis Obispo, but coaches George Hurley and Vic Ecklund were well-acquianted.
Hurley, the Newbury Park coach, and Ecklund, his counterpart at San Luis Obispo, were teammates in the late 1960s at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Hurley played center and Ecklund played offensive tackle.
“I thought it was really fun to coach against him,” Ecklund said. “We always talked about playing against each other and finally it came to pass.”
And pass, and pass. Newbury Park threw 50 passes.
But the fun mostly was Ecklund’s. His team won, 27-14, and will face Westlake in the final Friday night at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
“George has a great program at Newbury Park and I knew we had to play well against that team,” Ecklund said.
