HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK : Westlake Reaps Major Honors in Ventura County

Westlake High didn’t only win the Southern Section Division IV championship.

The Warriors also did well in the All-Ventura County awards, winning four of the five major-category honors as voted by county coaches.

Jordan Lampos was selected defensive lineman of the year, Michael Brignac was defensive back of the year, Keith Holt was offensive lineman of the year and the Warriors’ coaches were selected the staff of the year.

Buena running back D.J. Blackledge, who rushed for 1,779 yards and 25 touchdowns, broke up Westlake’s monopoly, winning offensive back of the year.

Holt, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound senior, was a steady run and pass blocker, helping Westlake average 39.1 points and 375.9 yards per game.

Brignac, a senior who also played receiver, had two interceptions, 60 receptions and 17 touchdowns.

Lampos, a 6-foot, 235-pound senior linebacker, was the leader of a defense that allowed 9.7 points and 187.9 yards per game.

Nine players were first-team selections for Westlake, which defeated San Luis Obispo, 24-21, in the championship game Friday.

Five players, including junior running back Marcus Crawford, made the team for Newbury Park. Buena also had five selections.
