Sampson Helps Mater Dei Rebound Against Simi Valley

Simi Valley’s bid for an upset of Mater Dei came up short as the Monarchs outscored Simi Valley by five points in the final quarter and won, 57-53, in the opening round of the Torrey Pines boys’ basketball tournament.

Mater Dei (12-1) eliminated Simi Valley (9-1) in the Southern Section Division I-A semifinals last season.

Six-foot-11 junior center Jamal Sampson led the way for Mater Dei. He was one of three Monarchs in double figures, with 10 points. He also blocked eight shots and got 17 rebounds.

Senior Steve Scoggin led the Monarchs with 11 points, all in the fourth quarter. Mike Strawberry had 10.

A third-quarter surge led by Branduinn Fullove gave Simi Valley a 42-34 lead with 2:40 left in the third quarter. Mater Dei answered, closing the gap to just one at the end of the quarter.

In other tournament games:

Capistrano Valley 60, La Jolla 57--Jake Franzen made three of his four free throws to put Capistrano Valley (8-4) ahead in the final 20 seconds. Capistrano Valley’s Matt Sweany scored 20 points and got eight rebounds.

No. 2 Ocean View 72, Chaparral (Ariz.) 59--Jeremiah Bell had 27 points and 11 rebounds for Ocean View (11-1). Ryan Westbrook had 12 points and nine assists for the Seahawks.

In the Brea Olinda tournament:

No. 10 Brea Olinda 62, Whittier Christian 52--Ryan Wilber scored 18 points and Ryan Moore added 16 for the Wildcats (8-4). Whittier Christian (4-8) got three three-pointers from Steve Zieman.

In the Carson City (Nev.) tournament:

No. 9 Newport Harbor 57, Reno (Nev.) 46--Dustin Illingworth had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Greg Perrine added nine assists for Newport Harbor (9-4) in the first round.

In the El Cajon Granite Hills tournament:

University 79, El Cajon 35--Jason Garey led University (8-3) with 19 points, and teammate Andy Lawrence added 16 points along with his seven assists. Sharif Elsherbany had 11 rebounds and scored six points for the Trojans.

In the Estancia tournament:

Estancia 90, Antelope Valley Christian 66--Jon Cantrell hit 10 three-pointers, one short of the Orange County record held by three people, and finished with 38 points for Estancia (8-4).

Corona del Mar 65, Los Angeles Roosevelt 55--Kevin Hansen had 31 points and teammate Joel Templeton had 10 rebounds to help the Sea Kings (9-3).

No. 8 Marina 75, Glendale Hoover 51--Dustin Kaatz had 38 points, including four three-pointers to lead Marina, which never trailed in the second half. Beau Brown had 11 points, including three three-pointers, for the Vikings.

Trabuco Hills 65, Edison 62--Evan Fields scored 24 points and Aaron Tudor had 18 for Trabuco Hills.

In the Katella tournament:

Bolsa Grande 77, Western 57--Omar Amarai scored 21 points for Bolsa Grande in the pool-play game. Robert Turner scored 30 points for Western.

In the Kentfield Marin Catholic tournament:

Servite 59, San Francisco Sacred Heart 55--Sophomore Martin Iti scored 14 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had eight blocks for Servite in the first round. Billy Burfeind added 10 points for the Friars (9-4).

In the Las Vegas tournament:

Woodbridge 70, Vallejo Hogan 62--The Warriors took a 16-point halftime lead in the first-round game, then held off Hogan down the stretch. Danny Lambert scored 18 points for Woodbridge (9-4), including 10 in the second half.

In the Orange tournament:

Foothill 76, Seattle Ingraham 59--Alex Rasmussen hit four three-pointers and finished with 23 points and Chad Bigler added 17 for Foothill (7-5).
