Oxnard Rises to Top in Pool Play Victory

Michelle Morgan scored 11 points and Oxnard High defeated Simi Valley, 36-25, during pool play in the Arroyo Grande girls’ basketball tournament on Tuesday.

Oxnard (9-4), ranked No. 9 in the region by The Times, won its pool and advanced to the championship game tonight against top-ranked Ventura at 5 p.m.

The Yellowjackets beat Clovis Buchanan, 47-35, earlier in the day.

Against No. 10 Simi Valley (9-4), Tiffany Walker and Symera Edwards limited guard Teresa Cooper to one drive to the basket and five points.

“We kind of curtailed their offense because she was the offensive flow,” assistant Richard Arias of Oxnard said.

Sienna Abraham added seven points and six steals for Oxnard.

Ventura 68, Arroyo Grande 32--Alex Gientke made 10 of 12 free throws in a 17-point performance, adding five assists and four of the Cougars’ 16 steals in pool play at the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Kristine Gleisberg added 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots for the Cougars (11-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.

Renee Jimenez scored 14, making three three-point baskets for Ventura.

Buena 57, Ashland (Ore.) 42--Courtney Young had 21 points and Kelly Greathouse added 20 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots for the No. 2 Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the Northwest Tournament at Westview High in Oregon.

Notre Dame 56, Galveston (Texas) Ball 42--Sierra Hauser-Price scored 19 points for the Knights (9-2) in a pool play victory at the Texas Invitational in Austin.

Earlier Tuesday, Price had 29 points in a 69-49 loss to Bryan, Texas.

Holy Martyrs 43, Faith Baptist 40--Laura Kurkjian scored 17 points for the Armens in a quarterfinal victory at the Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament.

Rose Sierra scored 13 points for the Contenders (6-3).

In a first-round tournament game, Faith Baptist defeated Santa Maria Valley Christian, 54-47, behind Sierra’s 25 points, nine rebounds and seven steals.

Brianna Weilbacher added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Contenders.

Newbury Park 61, Palmdale 22--Bridgett Harris scored 17 points for the Panthers (7-4) in a pool play victory at the Ayala tournament Open Division.

Paraclete 48, St. Bonaventure 43--Jackie Kolesar scored 16 points and Erika Hernandez added 15 for the Spirits (8-4) in a semifinal victory of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

L.A. Baptist 48, LaSalle 42--Ali Morrow and Liza Park each had 15 points for the Knights in an L.A. Baptist tournament semifinal victory.

Moorpark 73, Bell-Jeff 17--Kelly Geis scored 26 points for the Musketeers (8-3) during pool play in the Bell-Jeff (2-7) tournament.

Chaminade 51, Roosevelt 19--Crystal Greene had 14 points and three steals and Cassandra Goodson had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Chaminade in pool play at the Canoga Park tournament.

Chaminade (6-4) led 23-8 at halftime and had 14 steals.
