Northridge Reaps Large Local Harvest

With the signing period starting Wednesday for high school seniors, Cal State Northridge is having success recruitingfootball players in the region.

Wide receiver Travis Campbell of Westlake, a two-time All-Ventura County selection by The Times, has committed to the Matadors.

Also set to sign letters of intent with Northridge are offensive linemen Ashcon Madjid of L.A. Baptist and Nick Longshore of Canyon, and fullback Crayton Milton of St. Francis.

Northridge has commitments from linemen Isaac Aronson of Tacoma Curtis High and Alatini Malu of Torrance.

Sean Atkins, a former defensive back from San Fernando who played last season at Sacramento State, is transferring to a junior college and could end up at Northridge this fall. The Matadors are recruiting Atkins’ brother, Bryson, an All-Valley defensive back from Alemany.

Notre Dame receiver Todd Fenton, who set three school career receiving records, will attend Brown.

Fenton, an All-Valley selection, finished with 86 career receptions for 1,471 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Kevin Mack, a defensive lineman from Rio Mesa, has committed to Oregon.

BASEBALL

Brian Fatur of Moorpark College, an All-Western State Conference shortstop who batted .386 with 14 stolen bases last season, is academically ineligible.

The Raiders had been counting on Fatur, a former Calabasas High standout who has drawn attention from major league scouts, to play center field.

GOLF

UCLA’s Jason Semelsberger, a former standout at Hart High, was in a three-way tie for the lead after the first round of the PING Arizona Intercollegiate tournament at Raven Golf Club in Sabino Springs.

Semelsberger, Derek Gillespie of Arizona and Mike Lawrence of UC Irvine each shot five-under-par 66 to lead the field by two strokes. The final two rounds are scheduled to be played today.

SOCCER

Erin Misaki of Hart High has been chosen to the U.S. under-17 select team, which will play in an international tournament Feb. 12-21 in Orlando, Fla.

SOFTBALL

Melissa Rawson of Highland High has committed to play softball at Colgate. Rawson, a first baseman, batted .359 with four home runs and a region-best 36 runs batted in as a junior.
