Schmidt Picks Boston College Over Cal

Casey Schmidt of Newbury Park High, the region’s best high school soccer forward, said Wednesday he has committed to Boston College.

Schmidt, a member of the U.S. under-18 national pool, had offers from seven Division I schools and by Tuesday narrowed his choices to the Eagles and California.

“I felt like I needed to go East and get away for that experience,” Schmidt said.

VOLLEYBALL

Teresa Russell, a middle blocker at Royal High, signed a letter of intent with San Francisco.

The 6-foot-1 Russell, who was an all-region selection by The Times, chose the Dons over Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and Lehigh.

BASEBALL

Pierce College’s baseball team is hosting its Pete Kokon Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday at Woodland Hills Country Club.

Erika Hernandez of Paraclete is doubtful for the Alpha League championship game Friday against Village Christian.

Hernandez, who is averaging 12 points and eight rebounds, injured her left ankle Saturday in a nonleague game at Notre Dame Academy.
