From Staff Reports

Sammy Delrahim is averaging 35.8 points for Stoneridge Prep, though his scoring average and his school are likely to change next year.

Delrahim, a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard, has been actively looking at other schools and, in effect, has been marketing himself as a student-athlete.

Delrahim, who says he has a 3.8 grade-point average, went for an interview at Harvard-Westlake last week and also has Chaminade, Crespi and Campbell Hall on his list.

“I want to go to a school and help get a championship,” said Delrahim who, on any given night can be found watching a local high school basketball game.

Delrahim said he has enjoyed Stoneridge Prep, but he realizes winning a title at the tiny private Tarzana school, which has an enrollment of 74 students and does not have a gymnasium, is a longshot.

His scoring average will almost surely drop on a better team next season.

“They’re better [basketball] programs,” he said. “I like the crowds. I like the facilities and the exposure you get there. It motivates me.”

Oxnard (17-6, 6-0 in league play), the No. 9-ranked team in the region by The Times, can clinch the first Pacific View League basketball title with a victory at Hueneme (10-10, 4-1) tonight.

The Yellowjackets finished second to Dos Pueblos in the Channel League last year before joining the Pacific View League with Hueneme, Rio Mesa, Camarillo and Channel Islands.

Oxnard has won three consecutive games and nine of 10. Hueneme has won four in a row since consecutive losses to San Marcos and Oxnard.

Burroughs (13-9), Canyon (12-10) and Valencia (12-11) are tied for the Foothill League lead at 5-2 with three games left.

Burroughs tightened the race with an 84-64 home-court victory Tuesday over Valencia. Burroughs has won four in a row and is looking like a favorite.

Burroughs hosts Hart tonight and has games left at Canyon and at Burbank. Valencia is at Burbank tonight and has home games against Saugus and Canyon, which has a home game tonight against Saugus.

GIRLS’ NOTES

There’s a new fad in the region.

Burroughs, Hart, Buena and Crescenta Valley are among the girls’ teams in the region who have used marking pens to write the uniform numbers of injured teammates on their shoulders.

Coach Damian Scribner of Crescenta Valley claims his team was the first to do it, recognizing junior forward Laura Zerebko, who dislocated her shoulder.

“We’re going to patent the idea and charge other teams to do it,” he joked. “Actually, if it’s done to respect a player, I’m all for anyone doing it.”

Coach Dave Munroe of Hart usually doesn’t go for gimmicks, but relented when Indian players requested to recognize Emily Reyna, a three-year varsity player who underwent career-ending back surgery last week.

“I’m just not into that kind of stuff, but she has been such a big part of our program,” he said.
