Dominguez Will Have Oak Hill Battle

Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy has won seven mythical boys’ basketball national championships in 12 years.

Oak Hill (25-0) can take a major step toward clinching another title if it can get by ninth-ranked Compton Dominguez (21-2) tonight in the featured game of the eight-game Nike Extravaganza at Cal State Fullerton.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m.

Oak Hill, a 120-year-old Baptist boarding school in the Blue Ridge Mountains, draws players from across the United States. NBA players Jerry Stackhouse, Ron Mercer and Rod Strickland are among the more than 70 former Oak Hill players who have earned Division I scholarships in the last 14 years under Coach Steve Smith.

“On paper, this team is probably not as good as a couple other teams we’ve had,” Smith said. “But on the court, the players are proving themselves every night out.”

Steve Blake, a 6-foot-2 guard who has signed with Maryland; 6-7 forward Ronald Slay, who is going to Tennessee, and Virginia-bound 6-7 forward Travis Watson are the top players for Oak Hill.

Dominguez is led by senior guards Marcus Moore and Keith Kincaide, and 7-1 sophomore center Tyson Chandler.

William Avery, who now plays at Duke, led Oak Hill over Dominguez in 1997. Last year, Oak Hill beat the Dons, 65-63, in overtime.
