Santa Clara Turns Tables on Nordhoff, Shares Title

Santa Clara High, avenging an earlier loss to Nordhoff with a 76-37 victory, earned a share of the Frontier League boys’ basketball championship Thursday night at Santa Clara.

Nick Jones scored 29 points and B.J. Ward added 25 for the Saints (21-3, 6-2 in league play).

Jones also had 10 rebounds for Santa Clara (21-3, 6-2 in league play), ranked No. 7 in the region by The Times.

Nordhoff (18-5, 6-2) upset Santa Clara, 69-62, on Jan. 22, but trailed at halftime on Thursday, 39-22.

Andy Flores, who scored 24 points for Nordhoff in the teams’ first meeting, was held to 15.

Saugus 63, Hart 57--The Centurions made 16 of 20 free throws in the fourth quarter and clinched a playoff spot in a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Nic Echevestre scored 18 points for Saugus (13-12, 5-5), which finished tied for third place.

Jon Lyons and Tamir Barkan each scored 13 points for Hart (12-14, 1-9), which made only 19 of 64 shots.

Burroughs 56, Burbank 40--Kevin Krose and Keith Jarbo each scored 17 points at Burbank and the Indians won a share of their first league title in nine years.

Burroughs (16-9, 8-2) won consecutive titles in 1989 and 1990 when Coach Art Sullivan was an assistant to Ira Sollod.

The Indians have won seven consecutive games.

Hueneme 65, Camarillo 55--Robert Luna scored 17 points and Albert Garcia added 15 points for Hueneme in a Pacific View League victory at Camarillo.

Hueneme led, 28-27, at halftime, but the Vikings (11-12, 5-3) opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run and Camarillo was unable to rebound.

Luna had seven of his points in the third quarter.

Oxnard 64, Channel Islands 56--Ricky Hernandez scored 18 points for the Yellowjackets in a Pacific View League victory at Oxnard.

Damian Tafoya had 13 points for Oxnard (20-6, 8-0), ranked No. 9.

Oxnard held Dwight Sattiewhite to two points.

Paraclete 72, Village Christian 68--Glenn Jones scored five of his 20 points in overtime and the Spirits won an Alpha League game at Paraclete.

Brian Royster’s layup with 12 seconds left clinched the victory for Paraclete.

Daniel Eppink added 19 points, and Brian Whisler had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Spirits (10-14, 5-3).

Village Christian (9-14, 2-5) sank 11 three-point baskets, including four by Paul Tait and three by Clint Hamblin. Tait finished with 19 points and Hamblin had 10.

Faith Baptist 54, Ribet Academy 38--Lonnie Clayton scored 20 points and had 14 rebounds, and the Contenders (16-8, 11-1) clinched the Heritage League title at Ribet Academy.

Sherman Oaks CES 70, L.A. CES 57--Sinclair Brown and Robert Grey each had 15 points for Sherman Oaks CES in a Magnet League game at L.A. CES (7-13, 5-5).

Montclair Prep 66, Brentwood 38--Tony McFadden scored 18 points for the Mounties (7-18, 3-7), who climbed into a fourth-place tie with Brentwood in a Delphic League victory at Montclair Prep.
