Santa Ana Dominates League Wrestling

Santa Ana qualified wrestlers in all 14 weight classes for the Southern Section Division II Individual championships as the Saints dominated the Golden West League championships Thursday at Westminster High School.

It was also the first time Santa Ana had 11 wrestlers take league titles as the the Saints cruised by Saddleback, 171-114. Tustin finished third with 90 points, followed by Ocean View (72) and Westminster (39).

Jose Leon led the Saints at 119 pounds with a 28-13 major decision in the final. Alex Bacerra placed first also for Santa Ana with a pin in the 189 class. Sophomores Steve Avalos (145) and Juan Serna (135) also won their weight classes with pins for the Saints.

Art Rea (152) took first for Saddleback with an 11-2 decision over defending league champion Hector Urista of Santa Ana.

In Academy League boys’ soccer:

Capistrano Valley Christian 2, Riverside Bethel Christian 0--Matt Lindsay headed a rebound off the post into the goal in the 20th minute and Brian Morabito scored on a one-on-one with the goalie in the 66th minute. Zac Sandberg made four saves for his third league shutout and fifth overall for the Eagles (9-8-1, 6-2-1).

Sunny Hills 3, Troy 2--Kiley Wilson scored in the 70th minute to give Sunny Hills a 3-1 lead. Brent Templeton had a goal and two assists for the Lancers (4-16-2, 2-7-1), who had three-goals in the second half to knock Troy (10-8-3, 3-5-2) out of the playoffs.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 1, Huntington Beach 0--Junior Devin Kato headed in his team high 14th goal for Edison (6-2-2 in league) at the 65th minute against host Huntington Beach (8-2 in league).

In Freeway League girls’ water polo:

Buena Park 7, Fullerton 6--Cathy Smith, who had two goals, scored the eventual winner in the third quarter. Erin Adams scored three goals to lead Buena Park (6-14, 3-7). Smith’s younger sister, Kristal had seven saves in the game.

Sonora 6, La Habra 4--Laura Mc Nabb scored two goals for Sonora (14-6, 9-1). Sarah Janoian also scored two goals for host La Habra (2-8 in league).

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Capistrano Valley 13, San Clemente 2--Ashley Stachowski scored five goals and had six steals and Amber Stachowski scored three goals for Capistrano Valley (18-7, 5-0).

Dana Hills 4, Mission Viejo 3--Joanna Kaczmarek scored the winning goal with 3 minutes 21 seconds left in regulation after Mission Viejo’s goalie left the box. Dana Tucker (two goals) had the the tying goal for the third-place Dolphins (10-10, 3-2), who trailed 3-2 going into the fourth.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Saddleback 5, Santa Ana Valley 4--Agnes Kanska scored the winning goal for visiting Saddleback (8-10) with 26 seconds left. She finished with three goals.
