Servite, Tustin Keep Football Rivalry Alive

Tustin and Servite high schools will continue their football rivalry this fall with a nonleague game Sept. 3 at Tustin High.

Al Rosmino, Tustin’s athletic director, said the Southern Section’s executive council approved the early game. The majority of the county’s teams begin the 1999 season the following week.

Tustin and Servite have competed in the Golden West League since its inception in 1994. Servite holds a 4-1 edge and won league titles in 1994-96. Tustin’s victory came in 1997, when it finished first in league. The teams shared the title last year.

This fall, Servite, along with Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Rosary, moves to the Catholic Athletic Assn.

Erik Terry is the athletic director at Irvine High, replacing Rick Curtis, who took the job at Irvine’s newest high school, Northwood, which will open this fall.

Terry, 30, is in his second year at Irvine, where he teaches English and video productions. He is also offensive coordinator for the Vaqueros’ football team.

The Laguna Niguel resident was an assistant football coach at South Torrance for three years before coming to Irvine.

At Savanna High, Larry Anderson, who coached football at Katella from 1987 to 1996, took over as athletic director from Tom Voigt, who retired.

Anderson, 48, teaches physical education at the school.

Santa Ana quarterback Archie Lappin and Saddleback offensive lineman Ryan Thigpen have signed to play football at Division II Western New Mexico.

Lappin, from Loara High, passed for 1,691 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 246 yards and four more touchdowns.

Thigpen is from Santa Margarita High.

Three players have signed to play for the Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team.

Outside hitter Leilani Williamsen, who played for Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World High, is a transfer from Hofstra. The other players, Kim Levey and Jessica Bemis, are high school seniors. Levey, a setter, plays for Bakersfield Stockdale. Bemis, a middle blocker, is at Lakewood High.

Nicole Terry, an all-Orange Empire Conference forward at Cypress College, has signed to play soccer at Arizona State.

Terry, from El Modena High, scored seven goals and had 17 assists as Cypress won its first state soccer title.

Shauna Barnard of Laguna Hills High and the Nellie Gail Saddleback Valley Gators Aquatics club will compete in the upcoming World Cup Championship meets.

Barnard, 16, is one of 11 national level swimmers selected and will be one of five American swimmers to compete in all three meets--Saturday-Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland; Tuesday-Wednesday in Malmo, Sweden; and Feb. 20-21 in Paris.

Barnard, a 400-meter individual medley specialist, qualified for the meets on the merits of 1998 world ranking. She was 47th with a top time of 4 minutes 51.65 seconds.

Los Alamitos will honor late baseball coach Dave Hernandez by dedicating the Dave Hernandez Hall of Fame at 10 a.m. Feb. 27 at the school’s baseball field.

Hernandez, who died last November, coached at Los Alamitos from 1969 to 1976. He won eight consecutive league titles, and the Griffins reached the section’s Major Division title game in 1973.
