No. 2 Santa Ana Loses at Home to Leuzinger

Pedro Vera scored in the 38th minute off an assist from Manuel Vargas and Lawndale Leuzinger held on to defeat host Santa Ana, 1-0, in a boys’ soccer Southern Section Division I first-round game Friday.

Santa Ana, which won the Golden West League, finished the regular season ranked second in Orange County. The Saints end 15-5-4.

In another Division I game:

Santa Ana Valley 3, Fontana 2--Junior Aaron Barragan scored his second goal, the eventual game-winner, off an assist from Erik Sanchez for visiting Santa Ana Valley (9-9-4). Robert Pena also scored for the Falcons, who advanced to play the Temecula Valley-Chino Hills Ayala winner.

In girls’ Division II:

Edison 4, Cerritos Gahr 2--Lee Ann Morton had two goals and Jenny Roquemore had three assists for host Edison (17-5-4), which plays Sunny Hills next.

Sunny Hills 2, La Mirada 1 (sudden death)--Sunny Hills sophomore Simi Phull scored on a breakaway 11 minutes into sudden death. The goal was her 25th goal of the season. Junior Kate Stickel scored the tying goal for the Lancers in the 20th minute.

El Dorado 3, Riverside North 2--Freshman Vanessa Chanez scored the winning goal for El Dorado (16-8-2) in the 70th minute. Angela Rodriguez and Sandy Stasch each added a goal. It was Stasch’s 17th goal this season.

Riverside North finished 14-8-2.

Mater Dei 1, Canyon 0 (sudden death)--Tracey Winzen scored the game-winner for Mater Dei (14-4-5) off an assist from Paige Pancoast. Canyon finished 13-7-5.

Whittier La Serna 1, Loara 0--La Serna’s Emily Schubin got a goal past Loara’s Emily Goulding for the victory. Goulding had 11 saves.

Woodbridge 2, University 0--Emily Schwimmer and Sierra Cristiano each scored for Woodbridge (15-2-7) during the first half. Sierra’s goal gives her 16 for the season. University finished 12-7-7.

In Division IV:

Rosary 6, La Quinta 0--Laura Kucich scored a goal and had an assist to lead Rosary (16-5-2), which advances to play Temecula Chaparral on Tuesday.

In Division V:

Orange Lutheran 2, St. Margaret’s 1--Christine LaRock scored the winner in the 44th minute with assists from Rachel Gerling and Erin Lea, who also had an assist on Molly Slane’s goal in the third minute for the Lancers (8-3-2). Brittany Hunsaker scored in the 38th minute for host St. Margaret’s.
