SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Harvard-Westlake High will see a familiar face tonight in the Southern Section Division III-A girls’ basketball quarterfinals.

Jason Perez, a former Harvard-Westlake assistant who left the Studio City school six games into the 1996-97 season, is the coach at Immaculate Heart.

Immaculate Heart, which beat Blair in a first-round game Thursday, plays at Harvard-Westlake at 7:30. The top-seeded Wolverines had a first-round bye.

Freshman forward Terbrie Taylor has played sparingly for Harvard-Westlake this season, but you won’t hear any grumbling.

“I told her that if her father complains about playing time, I’m going to kick his rump,” Coach Brian Taylor said.

Then again, the coach is Terbrie’s dad.

Paraclete, which moved from the High Desert League to the Alpha League this season, will face a familiar foe tonight in a Division IV-AA opener: former High Desert rival Rosamond.

In three previous seasons under Coach Susan Hervey, Paraclete was 6-0 against the Roadrunners.

Notre Dame lost to Santa Ynez in a Division III-A opener Thursday, marking the third consecutive season that Coach Keith Case lost in the playoffs to the perennial Southern Section power.

“Someone is playing a cruel joke on me,” Case said.

Santa Ynez beat Case-coached Oak Park in 1997 and the Pirates defeated Notre Dame last season.
