Luster Helps Saddleback Win on Road

Saddleback, playing a rare road game, beat San Diego Mesa, 18-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday.

It was only the second game in 14 Saddleback (12-2) had played away from home this season.

Sophomore shortstop Jimmy Luster went three for four with a double and a home run for Saddleback, which scored five runs in the second to take a 5-3 lead.

Luster is hitting .538 with 25 runs batted in for the Gauchos, who open Orange Empire Conference play at Fullerton at noon Saturday.

Pat Wood had two triples and a single and drove in three runs and Greg Pines had two hits and two RBIs also for Saddleback.

In another nonconference game:

Fullerton 5, Los Angeles Valley 4--Relief pitcher Eddie Romprey, a freshman from Victor Valley High, started the ninth by walking the first two Los Angeles Valley batters. But he got the next three outs for his Orange-County leading fifth save.

Fullerton took a 5-1 lead into the eighth, but an error led to three unearned runs.

Rich Pohle had a double and a triple to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and David Cosato and Ernie Jaime each had two hits for Fullerton (10-5).

Pohle, Cosato, Jaime, Jimmy Zurn and David Fischer each drove in one run for Fullerton.

Shane Waroff pitched the first six innings, giving up six hits and one run, for the victory. He is 1-2.

In nonconference softball:

Rio Hondo 6, Orange Coast 5--Carrie Grimson had a double and triple for OCC.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Cypress 6, Fullerton 3--Fullerton’s John Babcock swept his match against Ian Mariano. Cypress’ doubles team of Jon Watson and Thien Khuu-Nguyen secured the win for the Chargers by defeating Stephen Pointing and Daniel Morales, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
