Simi Valley Close to Home Against Ventura

Simi Valley High, The Times’ top-ranked boys’ basketball team in the region, will meet streaking Ventura in a Southern Section Division I-A quarterfinal Friday night at Royal High.

The Pioneers advanced Tuesday with a 60-50 victory over Fullerton Troy. Ventura upset Empire League champion Anaheim Loara, 64-59, for its eighth victory in its last nine games.

In other quarterfinal games Friday, Alemany will play San Dimas at L.A. Baptist High in a Division III-AA game, and Pasadena Poly will visit Campbell Hall and Santa Clara will travel to Chadwick in Division V-AA.

The top semifinal in the region on Friday features Mission League rivals Chaminade and Harvard-Westlake at Notre Dame High in a Division III-A game. In the same division, Nordhoff and Corona del Mar will meet at Costa Mesa Estancia High.

Other semifinals are Crespi against Twentynine Palms at Yucca Valley High in Division IV-AA, and Antelope Valley Christian against Rio Hondo Prep at Arroyo High in Division V-A.

The games start at 7:30 p.m.

Tony Hoggatts of Glendale College has been chosen most valuable men’s basketball player in the Western State Conference Southern Division.

Hoggatts, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, joined teammates Steve Eernisse and Louis Fernandez as all-conference selections. Hoggatts averaged 16.8 points and 6.3 assists in conference games.

Valley College placed three players on the all-conference team--Alan Thomas, Tyree Williams and Jerrohn Jordan. Anthony Ellison and Charles Madison were honored from College of the Canyons.

Paraclete High boys’ basketball Coach Andy Gavel remained in stable condition Wednesday at Antelope Valley Hospital after being hospitalized Tuesday with high blood sugar.

BASEBALL

Defending Southern Section Division I champion Crescenta Valley High will have its alumni game March 3 at 5 p.m. at Stengel Field in Glendale.

North Hollywood High is seeking players to participate in its alumni game at 11 a.m. Saturday at North Hollywood. Information: George Vranau, (805) 581-6157.

Monroe will hold its alumni game Saturday at 11 a.m. Information: (818) 892-4311, extension 385.

Other alumni games scheduled for Saturday include Notre Dame at 10 a.m, Birmingham and Sylmar at 11 a.m., Taft and San Fernando at noon.

GOLF

The Los Angeles Chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Assn. is holding its annual membership drive March 10 from 6-9 p.m. at MountainGate Country Club. The 300-member chapter offers beginner and intermediate clinics, weekly league play and monthly outings at courses in the L.A. area.

Bill Holt, assistant coach at Canyons, died Tuesday from complications of an aneurysm. Holt was 63.

Holt, a longtime youth coach, also assisted at Saugus and Canyon high schools in recent years.
