Pulver, French Help Villa Park Defeat Foothill

Kristyn Pulver and Danee French each scored four goals for Villa Park in its 11-1 victory over Foothill in the second round of the Newport Harbor girls’ water polo tournament Friday.

Pulver also had seven steals. The Spartans (14-0), ranked second in the county, play fourth-ranked Newport Harbor in a semifinal game at 11 today at Newport Harbor High.

Newport Harbor defeated Palos Verde Peninsula, 15-4, in the quarterfinal round.

In the Western tournament:

Marina 17, Burbank Burroughs 4--Marina advanced to today’s semifinal game against El Modena. In an earlier game, the Vikings beat Jurupa Valley, 17-3, in the second-round game. Cara Chlebicki led Marina (9-3) with six goals in the two games.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Rosary 12, Katella 3--Kelly Cornelius had 11 saves for host Katella (6-5), but Natalie Golda and Julie Henn combined for seven goals and Britni DeGrazio had nine saves for Rosary (8-2).

In Freeway League girls’ basketball:

Troy 72, Buena Park 19--Troy (16-0, 1-0) hit 13 three-pointers and forced 33 turnovers (18 in the first quarter). Vanessa Yonamine led the Warriors with five three-pointers and Veronica Johns-Richardson scored 13 and had nine rebounds, seven steals and seven assists.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 41, Rancho Alamitos 21--Gloria Rojas had 11 of her 14 points in the third quarter for host Garden Grove. Erin Deane had seven points and 12 rebounds for Garden Grove.

Santiago 42, Los Amigos 28--Sega Asiata had 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Kelly Chavez scored 12 points for Santiago, which pulled away by outscoring Los Amigos, 13-5, in the fourth quarter.
