Conway Is Tied for Lead

Steve Conway, who will be a senior at Santa Margarita High this fall, was tied for the lead with Scott McGihon of Bermuda Dunes after 36 holes in the Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur Championship Friday at Industry Hills.

Conway shot one-under par 70 in the afternoon round on the 6,600-yard Zaharias Course to go with his one-over 73 on the 6,735 yard Eisenhower Course in the morning for a 143 total. Conway began his afternoon round with birdies on three of his first five holes and finished with nine consecutive pars.

McGihon shot 69 on the Zaharias in the morning and 74 on the Eisenhower in the afternoon.

John Pate of Santa Barbara, brother of PGA Tour pro Steve Pate, is one stroke behind the leaders at 144.

Keith Achman of Huntington Beach is tied for 10th at 147.

The 72-hole tournament continues with the third round today on the Zaharias Course. The final round is Sunday on the Eisenhower Course.
